Red palm weevil

The red palm weevil is a beetle originated in Southeast Asia living off of palm trees. It is present in Spain since 1993 and in the last years it has expanded through the Mediterranean Sea in the Canary island palm tree, date palm and Washingtonian.

This insect lives and eats from the inside of the leaf bases and in the trunk for several generations and it is very difficult to detect these damages even through optical inspection. These insects are able to make a palm tree collapse in less than 3 months.

Visual appearance of symptoms of red palm weevil: The symptoms do not appear until after a few months and when you detect them your palm tree is already in an advanced stage of infestation.

Leafs of palm trees start turning yellow, leafs wilt and they detach easily.
